Investigative Theater Field Research Team

web site

The Civilians, center for investigative theater, is looking for creative, inquisitive individuals to form our first Field Research Team. This Team will work in residence with our company for the 2014/2015 season and contribute directly to The Civilians shows and artistic programs and have the unique opportunity to get hands-on training in The Civilians’ method.

The Team will research project/interview ideas, conduct interviews, transcribe and edit interview material and help in the general creation of unique performances, events, and online media projects for our upcoming season. This Team will join The Civilians company as Artists-in-Residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Key components of that work will be conducting interviews and creating content based on the topics of death and dying in contemporary America and ancient Egypt for the show The End and The Beginning to be performed in the Temple of Dendur and for a new piece called The Way They Live based on The American Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Team will also potentially help create content for and have their work published on The Civilians’ upcoming online journal Extended Play, that will serve as a hub for investigative art and performance.

Members of the Team will receive training in The Civilians’ method and interviewing techniques from Artistic Director Steve Cosson, The Civilians’ Artistic Team and Associate Artists. Training with The Civilians will begin in September.

This is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity to become a part of The Civilians’ artistic community. This requires a season-long commitment (6-10 months). Schedule is flexible but 8-10 hours a week is preferred. Must be in NY or able to commute easily.

The ideal candidates will be open-minded and naturally curious. He/She should have experience in researching and interviewing.

To apply, please send a cover letter and current resume to The Civilians’ Director of Artistic Programs Ian Daniel projectmanager@thecivilians.org. Please tell us about any experience that might be relevant, that may include work in theater, journalism, and/or documentary.

Led by Artistic Director Steve Cosson, THE CIVILIANS creates new theater from creative investigations into the most vital questions of the present. Last season saw two highly successful Civilians shows in New York: MR BURNS: A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY at Playwrights Horizons, which was included in eight Top 10 of 2013 Lists, as well as THE GREAT IMMENSITY at The Public Theatre. This season, the company is the Artist-in-Residence of Met Museum Presents at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since its founding in 2001, the Obie award-winning company has been produced at numerous theaters in New York, including BAM Next Wave, Vineyard Theatre, Barrow Street Theater, Playwrights Horizons, and The Public; nationally at Center Theatre Group, the TED Conference, HBO’s US Comedy Festival, A.R.T., Actors Theatre of Louisville, and more; and Internationally at London’s Gate Theatre and Soho Theatre. The Civilians’ popular podcast Let Me Ascertain you is available through www.thecivilians.org and iTunes.
