The Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC) announces its inaugural Carnaval of New Latina/o theater—a showcase of new work by Latina/o playwrights and theatermakers in the United States hosted by The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago. The Carnaval endeavors to increase the visibility of work by Latina/o playwrights and to encourage the production of that work in the nation’s theaters. The gathering will include artistic directors, literary managers, new play development directors, and producers seeking new work/artists to present and support. It will welcome playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, and performers involved in the readings, as well as scholars, members of the LTC community and members of Chicago’s vibrant Latina/o theater community. As a programming extension of the LTC, the Carnaval seeks to connect producers to theatermakers, scholars, and the LTC community at large.

Workshop Details
Eight scripts or non-text-based pieces will be selected to be workshopped over the course of one week, resulting in a public readings/showings. Readings will be produced under an AEA Staged Reading Contract, allowing fifteen hours of rehearsal and performance combined. Each script will be assigned a professional director, actors, and dramaturg. Writers will be in the rehearsal room and may rewrite as much or as little as they prefer. Travel and lodging will be provided by the festival to selected writers. Writers will also receive a modest stipend.
Selection Guidelines—Eligibility
Works by Latina/o playwrights living in the United States, as well as non-text based works by Latina/o theatermakers will be considered. Submissions in both English and Spanish will be accepted. Small-scale musicals will be considered as resources allow (cast-size less than ten, piano only). Solo pieces as well as TYA pieces will also be considered. Submissions are limited to one play/piece per writer/artist. Selection will be based upon:
• Artistic merit: quality, impact, purpose, and aesthetics of the work.
• Geographical representation.
• Generational representation.
• Aesthetic representation: the Carnaval will feature a variety of aesthetic points of view.
Selection committee members from the Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern regions of the country will choose two pieces from each region. Submission Procedure
All applicants must send the following two documents:
1.) Your script (for non-text based projects this may be a performance outline, treatment, video documentation or anything that will give a clear sense of the work)
2.) An application document which includes:
• Your name, email address and phone number.
• A one-paragraph synopsis of the work.
• Number of performers required.
• Please list any prior development work for this play.
• Describe how you would use the resources provided by the Carnaval to
accomplish specific development goals for the play.
• Playwright biography (1 page limit).
All entries must be emailed. Please email your script and completed application document as
two separate attachments in the same email. Hard copies via snail mail will not be accepted.
PDF documents are strongly recommended to avoid formatting discrepancies.
