Variations Theatre Group (VTG) is seeking short plays for their second Avant-garde Play Festival. The selected plays will receive a showing at the Hudson Guild Theatre, beginning July 11, 2012. During the course of two (2) weeks, there will be three (3) official rounds of play-staging, with winners of each round chosen by a combination of audience and judges’ votes. The winning playwright will receive a prize of $1,000.00 and the opportunity to develop the play into a full length production with VTG next season. There is a possibility that selected shows will be webcast through subscription channels and would also be shown later through youtube.com in a video subscription channel. VTG pays a good deal of attention in obtaining publicity for the festival through social media, subject to rules and constraints from various professional unions.

You may submit up to two (2) plays/applications for the festival. Submissions will only be accepted online to submissions@variationstheatregroup.com. Please include a completed application form (available at the web site), a character breakdown of your play, and a copy of your script as a PDF or Word document. All submissions must be received by 5pm on April 13th, 2012.

If your piece is chosen to participate in the festival there is a NON-REFUNDABLE production fee of $300.00, to be paid immediately upon acceptance. This cost will help defray some of the expenses such as publicity and space rental. In addition, each production will receive two (2) complimentary tickets to the Awards Ceremony/Final Performance.

Variations Theatre Group defines a “submittable piece” as any medium that can be given a proper showing in a 30-minute time slot. These include, but are not limited, to short one-act plays, performance art, cabaret acts, improv troupes, comedy acts, dance pieces or short films. Pieces should be engaging, daring, and “push the envelope.” Ideal pieces would be those that deal with the human condition in an innovative manner!

Please note: All groups are responsible for producing their own individual pieces. However, Variations Theatre Group will assist with finding actors, directors, and any technical assistants needed.

If you've written a script and would like to send it to Center Theatre Group, please submit a brief description of the work and from five to ten sample pages. Your description need not be a full synopsis of the plot. Describe the play—the world, the characters, the conflict, your reasons for writing it. The sample pages, of course, will be most helpful to us in deciding whether or not to request the full manuscript. Multiple submissions are not encouraged.

You may also include any supporting materials—such as a résumé, audio tape and/or reviews of your work—that might allow us a broader view of you and your work. Please allow us approximately six to eight weeks to review your submission. As always, please include a SASE for all correspondence and, should you desire it, the return of your materials.

2012 Duncanson Artist-in-Residence
Actor/Playwright

To honor the relationship between African American painter Robert S. Duncanson (1821-1872) and Cincinnati art patron Nicholas Longworth (1782-1863), the Robert S. Duncanson Society of the Taft Museum of Art annually recognizes the achievements of contemporary African American artists through the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program.

For two weeks, the artist is active in the community through public events, workshops, and outreach to area schools, working with students in the classroom and at the Taft to strengthen their understanding of the arts and the relevance of the arts to their lives.

The ideal candidate for 2012 will be an actor/playwright who will be commissioned by the Robert S. Duncanson Society and the Taft Museum of Art to write and perform a one-man show based on the life of Robert S. Duncanson to be premiered and performed at various venues in Greater Cincinnati during the two-week residency. Special consideration is given to emerging professional artists. The purpose of the residency is to promote and develop a deepening awareness of African American art and artists and to inspire future generations. Previous Duncanson Artists-in-Residence include (among others) poet/essayist Nikki Giovanni, filmmaker William Greaves, playwright/screenwriter Keith Josef Adkins, visual artist Brian Joiner, violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama, and soprano Adrienne Danrich.

Dates of Residency: November 1-15, 2012 (some flexibility)
Honorarium: $7,500 (plus per diem; lodging and travel provided if necessary)

Responsibilities include:
-Researching the life of Robert S. Duncanson to inform the script
-Attendance at reception(s) to open or close residency
-Writing and performing longer (approximately one to one and one-half hours) and shorter versions (approximately one-half hour to 45 minutes) of the show.
-Evening and/or weekend public presentations (3-5)
-Up to 10 programs with school groups, including a day-long session at the local magnet school for the arts
-Morning and lunchtime program for sponsors of residency
-Weekend program for families
-Weekend master class or workshop for teens/adults
-Additional programs for targeted audiences, to be determined
-Publicity appearances and commitments prior to and during residency

Note: These responsibilities are subject to some flexibility. It is our mission to reach the broadest possible audience and to form as many community collaborations as possible.

OKC Theatre Company is pleased to announce that SALVAGE by Diane Glancy has been selected to be the cornerstone production of the THIRD annual Native American New Play Festival in June 2012. The festival will also feature staged readings of two or three finalists. We are currently accepting scripts for the 2012 Festival.

Submission guidelines:

Finalists will be selected from submitted plays which meet the criteria outlined below. These selected plays will then be presented in a readers’ theatre format which will be open to the public. Audience feedback is encouraged. The play selected as the most outstanding in the 2012 Festival will receive a fully-staged production at our theatre as the featured event of the next Native American New Play Festival (2013).

Submission deadline for the 2012 Native Play Festival is March. 15, 2012. Scripts received after that date will be considered for the following year.

Playwright must be a registered Native American on a federally recognized roll.
Must be a full-length play without a prior full production.
E-mail/ Send brief synopsis together with a complete manuscript. Please include a contact phone number and e-mail address on the play’s title page
Dramas, comedies and farces are all welcome.

Victory Gardens is searching for new, challenging, and innovative plays by writers of color for the 2012 festival.

The third IGNITION festival will create a productive environment for both emerging and established playwrights of color to explore and develop their new work. Six new plays will be presented in a festival of readings scheduled July 29-August 5, 2012. The plays will be directed by leading artists from Chicago and around the country. Following the readings, the plays may be considered for further development and possible production at Victory Gardens Theater.

Victory Gardens provides selected playwrights with housing and transportation as well as a stipend for one rehearsal week beginning July 29th through the final event of the festival weekend on August 5, 2012.

Submission Guidelines:

There is no restriction as to subject matter. Victory Gardens hopes that a diversity of perspective will inform the plays, but the plays do not have to deal specifically with race, ethnicity or identity issues.
The initiative is open to all playwrights of color.
Submitted plays must be unproduced and must be in English or primarily in English.
Playwrights may only submit one full-length play.
Plays must be submitted by mail, not electronically, and should not be permanently bound.
Please include a biography or resume as well as the reading/development history of the submitted script. Please be sure to include your email address as well as your phone number(s).
Please include a return addressed postcard if you wish to be notified when the script arrives. All scripts will be recycled after reading and will not be returned.

The Sitcom Trials will take place on Friday March 30th,
2012, at the Wardrobe Theatre, St Michael's Hill, Bristol.

This will be a rehearsed-reading/script-in-hand/radio-style affair. These sitcoms will be in competiton with each other, the winner to be decided an audience vote.

THE BRIEF for submission to The Bristol Sitcom Trials.

The Sitcom Trials wants situation comedy scripts that a small group of actors can perform in a live environment with minimal stage in front of an audience, who will hopefully laugh. Ideally these sitcoms will be so marvellous that the TV & radio industry representatives in the audience will snap them up immediately.

THE FORMAT:

Your script must have a first 'half' of less than 8 minutes
This first half should end in a cliffhanger, or something that leaves
the audience wanting more.

It must then have a final scene of 2 or 3 minutes long. This will be
performed only if your sitcom is the winner on the night

Your script must have NO MORE THAN 4 CHARACTERS. Ideally 2 boys 2 girls.
If you can write a script with just 2 or 3 characters, all the better.

The sitcoms we are to test out in our regular pub theatre shows with an eye to them being developed for TV must be
PERFORMABLE LIVE (ie no filmed or location inserts)
&
ON ONE MINIMAL SET.

Think in terms of a radio script.

WRITER-PERFORMERS - INCLUDE YOUTUBE DEMO

We are particularly interested to hear from writer-performers, especially those with an on-stage track record (eg Edinburgh) who would present their own sitcom as a self contained package. To demonstrate your live potential we would need to see a video, ideally a link to a YouTube video, which we can judge alongside the script. Please include the video link as part of the script.

To submit monologues:

Monologues need to be between one and three minutes. Please specify what age group
you intend the monologue to be performed by. Also specify if the monologue is a standalone
or if it is excerpted from a larger play. (And, if excerpted, is that larger work
published? – and if so by whom.)

There is a limit to the number of accepted scripts.
If you have a monologue chosen, you’ll get a payment choice of a small stipend or five
copies of the book. And your work will be immortalized for tomorrow’s starry-eyed

The Puzzle is in its second year! We are currently looking for plays, musicals, and the spoken word that illuminate the human condition staying within Marble Collegiate Church’s positive, inclusive, and welcoming nature. Last year’s festival brought together over 100 participants from across the country, over 500 audience members, and proved to be an eclectic, yet interlocking, mosaic of creative people and expression for the Marble Community and New York City.

2012 Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing

What Is It? The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing seeks to nurture talent in mystery writing—in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.

Who May Apply? The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Membership in Mystery Writers of America is not required to apply. Because the McCloy Scholarship is intended for serious aspiring mystery writers who wish to improve their writing skills, we expect that most applicants will be college students or adult learners.

How Shall the Scholarship Be Used? The scholarship shall be used to offset tuition and fees for writing workshops, writing seminars, or university/college-level writing programs taking place in the U.S. in summer, fall or winter of 2012 or early spring 2013. Applicants must select a specific writing class/workshop/seminar to which scholarship funds would be applied.

What Is the Scholarship Amount? MWA will present two scholarships for up to $500 each. Scholarship checks are issued in late Spring and are made out jointly to scholarship winners and their chosen educational institutions.

Submission Details Applicants are required to submit:

* ONE Scholarship application form, completed - download application on the web site

* ONE copy of the official description of the writing class/workshop/program (from college catalog, workshop brochure, or other.)

* TWO letters of recommendation (e.g., from teachers who can speak to the applicant’s writing ability)

What is Aural Traditions ?
Aural Traditions is a new media presentation that brings writers and performers together in order to showcase both in an inexpensive and easily distributable medium with potential for world wide exposure.

What is Dialed In ?
Dialed In is a anthology connecting the audience to a series of horrific, comedic, twisted and utterly absurd phone conversations.

Guidelines
Aural Stage Studios is looking for pieces specifically fit for audio performance. We are a performance-based group seeking submissions that are heavily character-based with audio performance in mind.

All script submissions should be in or adaptable to an audio format, to be featured on one of our audio drama programs.

Submissions for Aural Traditions should have no more than five characters, including the narrator.

Submissions for Dialed In should take the form of a telephone conversation.

Submissions for stand alone pieces and alternative series may also be submitted and will be reviewed for potential future projects by our producers and crew.

What genres do you produce ?

While we don’t really specify genres, we can tell you a little about our tastes:
Matthew is partial to the absurd, surreal, horrific and strange, which are great for audio.
Samantha would like to see pieces on both ends of the spectrum, both humor and heavy relationship stuff.
Monique is compelled by things that have a history or back story to them.
Strong, unusual characters lure actors, but characters should try to take themselves seriously (camp pieces excepted).
Holiday themed pieces are great and will be produced and released accordingly.
Dynamic plot lines, characters and ideas are what makes us happy.
In the phone series, we’d like to see some entries with established relationships. Our entries so far have been phone calls between strangers. These are fine, but we’d like to see a little of both.

To Fee or Not to Fee – Is There a Question?

Several times a month a member will write in and ask why we publish submission opportunities that have fees attached when the Guild vehemently does not support submission fees of any kind. The answer is really simple: your Council believes that the choice to submit for an opportunity that has a submission fee should be up to the individual dramatist; we should not make that decision for you (by not posting the opportunities).

I know most of you know how I feel about paying a fee to submit your work, so I won't raise my blood pressure (or yours) by stating how outrageous, unjust, disrespectful, unfair, unnecessary and. . . oh, wait. I wasn't going to do that. Okay, what I should simply say is this: I won't pay them. I hope you won't either. But that should be a choice you make, and not me for you, or anyone else for that matter.

What I absolutely love, by the way, is when one of you copies me on an email you write to a theatre that essentially says, "I'd love to submit to your contest, but my Guild does not support submission fees of any kind. When and if you rid yourself of this unfair tax on a community of starving artists, I'll gladly reconsider submitting my material."

That said, and reading what I've written above, I know some of you pay submission fees. I understand – genuinely I do. There are fewer and fewer opportunities for more and more dramatists. But here's what I'd ask you to think about: if a theatre knows they can get just one fee from one dramatist, their led to think there are more dramatists where that one comes from. Imagine if a theatre opened a contest with a submission fee and the only thing that was submitted were letters that said, "I'd love to submit to your contest, but I can't and won't pay your fee."

Little Fish Theatre is accepting scripts for our fourth annual "Twisted, Spooky, Creepy" production, presented in October 2012.

Scripts can be either comedic or dramatic, and should have one or more of the following themes: Halloween, dark comedy, ghost story, horror, psychological thriller, thriller -- and twisted, spooky, or creepy!

Submission Dates: Now through March 31, 2012

Call for Submissions to BUA’s inaugural Festival of Ten-Minute Plays (we’re still trying to come up with a cool name), sponsored by Buffalo United Artists Theatre in Buffalo, New York. The three-day festival is tentatively scheduled for June 29, June 30, and July 1, 2012, and will be held at Buffalo United Artists, at 119 W Chippewa St, Buffalo, NY 14202.

The Submissions:

*All plays must have an LGBT theme that is central to the play’s premise.

*All plays must be no longer than ten minutes. If you’re not sure, please read it aloud. No exceptions, no matter how brilliant the extra minutes may be.

*All plays must have minimal set requirements. Plays chosen will get full productions at BUA’s black box theater, but as there will be eight to ten plays being performed, there will be no time for elaborate set changes.

*Please email ten-minute plays with minimal set requirements to buasubmissions@gmail.com in standard format (Courier or 12 pt font) in Word or PDF.

*Subject line should have your name and title of the play, e.g. BROWN/MY GAY PLAY.

*Body of email should contain contact information (including email and phone) and the play’s production history only (yay! You don’t have to write a cover letter!).

The Deadline:

Submissions must be received by March 31, 2012. We prefer earlier to later, as we’ll be reading and culling as the submissions come in.

You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your play. Finalists will be notified by email by April 30. We are sorry we cannot respond to each individual playwright.

The Producer:

Buffalo United Artists will provide directors, actors, designers, and technical crew for the festival. If necessary, the directors will contact the playwrights at the beginning of the rehearsal process. The Production:

We are also looking for new scripts for a possible "adults only" late night show which would follow the regular show. This is a chance to push some boundaries and experiment with more mature content. Shelterskelter runs in October, featuring short plays dealing with horror, suspense, dark humor, and the macabre. The Northfield Arts Guild is proud to invite submissions for its Seventh Annual Very Short Play Festival (VSPF VII) to be held on April 27 and April 28, 2012. The Northfield Arts Guild Theater will host the festival.

Submissions cannot exceed TEN MINUTES IN LENGTH when ACTED FULLY on stage.
Writers of ANY AND ALL AGES are encouraged to submit their work. There are no restrictions on genre or content, just on the length of the play. Submissions can be complete short plays or stand-alone excerpts from longer works.

If selected, WRITERS will be required to PRODUCE their play for stage and PROVIDE their own ACTORS. Therefore, even if you live far away from Northfield, MN, you, as the playwright, will be responsible for getting your play to Northfield on April 27 and 28, 2012.

The selected youth plays (those rated G or PG) will be performed on Friday night, April 27. The selected adult plays (those rated PG-13 and up) will be performed on Saturday night, April 28.
On each performance night, each team will need to set up and clear the stage really quickly, and there will be only one 30 minute tech rehearsal per team. Thus, all technical elements of the play must be as minimalistic as possible.

We are currently accepting submissions for the 2013-14 Reva Shiner Comedy Award (deadline Oct. 31, 2012). The top 10 finalists and the winner of the 2012-13 Reva Shiner Comedy Award will be announced at the end of March.

The Reva Shiner Comedy Award presents an unpublished full-length comedy with a cash prize ($1,000), a full production as part of the Bloomington Playwrights Project's Mainstage season, and travel expenses up to $300. Previous winners have gone on to enjoy productions around the world and to garner additional honors such as the National Play Award. Past winners of the award include Amanda Rogers, Anne Flanagan, Lynda Martens, Johnna Adams, Terri Wagener, Sarah Treem, Buzz McLaughlin, Janet Burroway, Jamie Pachino, Itamar Moses, Judy Sheehan, and Alan Brody.

The Bloomington Playwrights Project is a not-for-profit theatre with non-Equity performers. The theatre is a black box with 90 seats. Because the BPP is a script-developing organization, winning playwrights are expected to become part of the development process, working with the director in person or via long-distance.

The winning play receives a production during the Mainstage season following the selection; the winning playwright receives $1,000.

Rules and Submission Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION (subject to change):

1. "Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).

2. Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.

3. Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.

4. Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. The BPP only accepts U.S. checks or money orders (Make check payable to "BPP"). Play Submission Guidelines: EWP now accepting unsolicited manuscripts

Please be aware that we are an Asian American theatre, and most of the new works we produce revolve around Asian Pacific American (as opposed to Asian) characters and/or themes. We are looking for both comedy and drama, in English and financially viable (which includes considerations such as cast size, number of sets, etc.), and they don't necessarily have to be "issue-oriented", in that race can be an unspoken component in the work.

Writers are strongly encouraged to browse through our production history, which can be found here. Ask yourselves what kind of plays we've produced in the past, and who our audience is.

Manuscripts should be bound, preferably with brads and three-hole punch paper, with a title page containing all contact information for the author. Please also include cover letter and resume.

If you'd like to send a SASP (self-addressed stamped postcard) for confirmation of receipt, we'll send it back to you when we receive your materials.

Orange Tea Theatre Company is an exciting new English language theatre company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We are appealing for a new play to be performed here late spring or early summer.

This would be a great opportunity for someone looking to have a world or European premiere of his or her writing, and an opportunity to build a relationship with a budding company.

BWT is always looking for new dramatic voices for possible future productions. Due to limited funding, shows that require elaborate sets, special effect cues, and costumes are difficult to consider for production. Please follow these other guidelines below.

General Rules

Playwrights must first send a letter of introduction with details of a play they would like to submit for consideration prior to sending a full length script.

Do not send a S.A.S.E. All scripts that are declined will be recycled.
A current theatrical resume (preferred, but not required).
If your letter of introduction is met with approval send only that script to be considered.
Do not send large bulk packages of plays. Some playwrights have sent up to eight scripts at once and that is not something that we recommend.
Choose book or media rate to save on shipping costs.
No children's, 10 minute or short one-act plays.

What is New Voices for a New Generation?
Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte has been working for more than 3 years to develop and fund New Voices for a New Generation, an annual new play festival scheduled for August 2012. Beginning in September 2011, Actor’s Theatre will begin taking submissions for new, previously unproduced plays by emerging American playwrights. Actor’s Theatre envisions New Voices being a springboard for new plays to catapult to the national stage through our existing relationship with the National New Play Network, as well as a program to mentor the next generation of professional artistic talent in the Charlotte region.

The goals of New Voices are three-fold:

To celebrate and cultivate new plays by emerging American playwrights.
To incubate professional artistic talent in the Charlotte region.
To educate the public on the process of taking new plays from page to stage.

NEW VOICES FOR A NEW GENERATION was created by Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte to honor and encourage emerging playwrights of the American Theatre. Four authors of selected works will be awarded a $500 honorarium, with transportation and housing provided. There will be a four-day residency and two script-in-hand public readings to take place in August 2012. Following the end of the four-day festival, the audience favorite will be invited by the Theatre for a full production in the 2012 – 2013 season.

Theatre staff will select the four festival plays, and the decision will be announced in May 2012.
Eligibility

Scripts must be unpublished and non-professionally produced at the time of the Festival. Workshops and readings are acceptable.
Selected playwrights must be in attendance for the Festival in August 2012.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The National Laboratory for New Jewish Culture at the 14th Street Y and the Jewish Plays Project are seeking five collaborative teams of theater artists for a three-week pilot residency program. Modeled on the Space residency at Mabou Mines (and to some extend ART-NY's Creative Spaces Grant), the residency is designed to give selected artists time, space and support to create vibrant new work that extends the Jewish conversation through cutting-edge theater forms and techniques.

At the same time, the residency is a key pilot program in the Project's mission to engage Jewish audiences in the future of Jewish theater. Projects are selected using a curated jury process that gives equal voices to a 30-member Community Panel and a ten-member Artist panel.

Selected artists will also participate in the revolutionary artists' Beit Midrash process developed at LABA, learning how ancient texts can inspire and inform their artistry.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE CONTEST IS OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, DENOMINATIONS, FAITHS, CREEDS, RELIGIONS and other IDEALS. We believe that Jewish identity and culture are specific manifestations of universal human cravings for spiritual, ethical, moral and worldly joy. "Matrilineal descent" is neither important nor necessary.

SUBMISSION: Proposals are due by March 15 at 6 PM, and are expected to contain multimedia descriptions of the project that give a full sense of the work to be created. Use short videos, slide presentations and/or audio support – not just text. Each proposal must submitted electronically and consist of three individual documents:

1. Artists: Resumes/bios of the three primary artists on each project.
* Show us your personality. Give us a sense of who you are and the kind of work you make.
2. Project: Scripts, treatments or concept pieces that describe the project and give a full sensory description of the proposed work.
*Be creative. If your piece has a full script, don't let that be the end of your proposal. Think broadly about how to communicate, visually and aurally, the work to be made.
3. Target Audience Demographic: A breakdown of the expected audience for the piece. Describe your ideal producer, in or out of New York, and the key demographics that you believe your piece is meant for.
* This is not a business test – we are looking for an understanding of where the project fits into the wider New York and regional theater culture, so that we may best assist in the future life of the pieces developed.

LiveWire seeks an image to inspire new plays!

VisionFest 4: Where the image meets the stage will be presented in June of 2012. Further guidelines and timelines for the festival below:

PLAY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Submissions will be required to use the final image as inspiration. The image should not appear in the play. Submissions are open to local, regional, national and international playwrights.

Only original material may be submitted.
LiveWire will ONLY be accepting online submissions.
Submission should be sent via email vf4-play@livewirechicago.com.
Submissions should be formatted as a PDF (.pdf) or Word Doc (.doc) with the title of the play as the name of the file (i.e., My-Awesome-Play.doc).
Do not include playwrights' name on any of the pages in the document.
In the body of the email, please include: Playwrights' Name, Title of Play, Email Address, Phone Number and Current City of Residence.
Submissions will be open February 13 through May 5. (Any submissions sent outside of these dates will be discarded.)
Plays must be between 1 to 10 minutes in length; 1 to 10 pages depending on density of material. (Any scripts over 10 minutes will be discarded.)

For our inaugural festival, we asked the community to help chose a theme. Through an online poll that offered 12 suggestions from the Collective, the theme of Control was chosen for VisionFest 2008. In 2009, we sought suggestions for Environments that plays would take place in. From those suggestions, the Collective chose 12 for the online poll. The community voted and chose a Street Corner as their preferred Environment. Last year, LiveWire chose the theme of Feast for VisionFest3 and asked for suggestions of a line or phrase that all playwrights would have to include in their play. Again, we chose a dozen of those suggestions to place in an online poll. "I can't remember the last time we were all together," won the community vote.

Once the unique guidelines are chosen, LiveWire opens submissions to playwrights to write plays that meet the requirements. Each year, we have received more than a hundreds plays from writers around the world. From those plays, the Collective chooses 6 to 10 plays to present. At the festival, programs are provided with ample space for the community to offer feedback to the playwrights. LiveWire collects the feedback and sends them to the playwright at the end of the run... The community truly has a hand in shaping these plays and we hope they will continue to help shape the festival for year's to come.

MOMENTS OF PLAY 2012 - 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

Salem Theatre Company is now accepting 10-Minute Play submissions in preparation for their 6th Annual MOMENTS OF PLAY scheduled for July 11- 15, 2012.

Plays must be received by midnight on Saturday, March 31, 2012.

Plays received via POST OFFICE will be unable to be considered and will not be returned.

Playwrights may submit up to two plays. If more than two are sent then none will be considered.

Plays must be no more than 10 minutes in length and have no more than four characters.

STC is looking for pieces that are culturally diverse, original, fun and relevant.

Play Competition Guidelines

2012-2013 New UUCT Children’s Play Competition Guidelines:

1. Only original, unpublished full-length plays may be submitted. Plays must not have been previously produced or won awards. Readings are acceptable if no admission was charged and actors read from the script. Musicals and non-musicals will be accepted.

2. At least fifteen characters ages 12-16 years old with at least ten being girls or androgynous.

3. The play should center around at least one social awareness or moral issue including, but not limited to, those dealing with bullying, the environment, self-image, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, homosexuality, abortion, drugs, technology, politics and/or religion.

4. All submissions should be made in standard manuscript form. All author information must be on a title page separate from the body of the manuscript and no reference to the author is permitted in the body of the script. The title page should list the play's title and the playwright’s name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and page count.

5. Also please include a second title page listing the title of the play; a 1-2 paragraph synopsis; a list of characters followed with a list of acts and scenes. No reference to the author should be on this sheet.

6. By submitting the manuscript to the UUCT New Play Contest, the playwright agrees that UUCT will have exclusive rights to produce the winning play(s) and/or a reading of the play(s) during the 2012-2013 season. Plays will be judged and selected by a 4 person panel of accomplished local artists.

7. Entries must be submitted by mail and postmarked no later than June 01, 2012. Due to volume of mail, manuscripts cannot be returned.

Silver Spring Stage is seeking original one-act and 10-minute scripts for its upcoming annual One-Act Festival. The Festival will run for three weekends in late Summer, 2012. Two weekends will be comprised of one-act plays. The third weekend will be comprised of 10-minute plays.

Silver Spring Stage will award Playwrights' Prizes at the conclusion of the Festival. Prizes will be $150 for Best One-Act Play, $100 for One-Act Runner-Up, and $100 for Best 10-minute Play.

Submission requirements:

    Please send all submissions in two separate files, as follows:
        One file containing a separate cover letter including the author's name and contact information.
        One file containing: (a) a separate cover page including the play title, a character list/description, and a brief description of the play; and (b) the script. All mentions of the author's name or contact information must be removed from this file.
    All scripts must be submitted in standard professional play format.
    10-minute plays may not exceed 10 pages in length. One-Act plays may not exceed 50 pages in length.

10-Minute Play of the Month: MARCH 2012

The theme is "year of the Dragon"

The year 2012 is the Chinese year of the Dragon. The play can be about the Chinese New Year observation of the year of the Dragon, or about dragons in Asian folklore, in European folklore, in American folksong (Puff the Magic Dragon), etc. Basically, the play has to feature a dragon in some significant way.

The deadline is Sunday, March 4th at 11:59 PM.

1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.

10. The play can have had a previous production but cannot have been published.

11. All rights will remain with the playwright.

12. The selected play will be videotaped and posted during the month of March.

13. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.

14. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.

15. The readings that are recorded are actual script-in-hand readings, not productions - although there may be some video production work, such as multi-camera views, music, titles; or minor stage work such as hand props or actor movements. The January 2012 Play of the Month is BOUND BY BLOOD by Clinnesha D. Sibley, performed by Keona Welch and Lorenzo Scott. Thanks for your wonderful work and for sharing your talent.

Clinnesha writes:

The most riveting part of my experience when visiting the National Civil Rights Museum (formerly known as the Lorraine Motel) in Memphis, TN, was my encounter with Jacqueline Smith, a Black woman who occupies an outdoor table and talks to visitors about why she boycotts the museum and why we should, too. It turns out this woman was the last holdout tenant and employee at the Lorraine and was evicted in 1988 so that the sacred ground could become the National Civil Rights Museum.

In 2009, Life magazine released these photos taken by Henry Groskinsky. These images captured the gruesome aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s murder. Among the photos were two images of a man named Theatrice Bailey sweeping up King’s blood from the motel balcony and even more eerie, scraping his blood into a jar.

Although the piece would not exist without the MLK “event”, I was drawn to how everyday people were possibly affected that intense night of April 4, 1968. I wanted to create an imaginary and foreshadowing discourse between these two real-life individuals: Jackie and Theatrice. To me, they are great representations of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

SCHEDULE & SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Submitted short plays must be less than 15 minutes long, centered on the theme serendipity.

Submissions should be previously unproduced.

Only one submission per author will be accepted.

8 finalists will be chosen by a panel of 5 readers. Reading will be blind, so AUTHOR NAME and other author information CANNOT BE ON THE PAGES OF THE PLAY but only on the cover page (which will not be distributed). Failure to comply will result in disqualification.

Pagination should begin on page 1 of the text. Please include name of play on each page.

Please submit in ms word or pdf format. Please use no more than 5 characters in your play.

Please be aware that selected plays will be staged with minimal sets, props, costumes, lights and sound.

Hobo Junction Productions, the Chicago theater company behind the original musicals “Bad Guys in Suits” and “The Regulars,” is seeking ten-minute comedies for their 4th annual short play festival, Hobo Robo 4: Hobos in Hollywood.

Every year, Hobo Junction selects a new theme that all submitted plays must adhere to – this year's theme is, as the title suggests, Hollywood. Be it a humorous statement on celebrity lifestyle, a satire of the film industry, a parody of your favorite film, or a dark comedy about a drug-abusing rock star (stereotypes are beautiful), the play must deal in some way with the entertainment industry. Oh, and it should be hilarious.

Guidelines:

Playwrights may submit up to three scripts each, so long as none of the three have been previously published or professionally produced. Staged readings and workshops are acceptable. Scripts should not be longer than ten pages each.

Please include writer contact information on the title page of each script, as well as a cover letter telling us a little bit about yourself.

Submission Guidelines:

Settings should be simple or suggested.
Playwrights may make multiple submissions. These need not be made under separate cover. Please do not submit works that have been previously submitted.

Please submit a cover letter, a synopsis, and a resume along with one copy of the play. Cover-sheet of play should have title, author, author’s address, author’s telephone number, and author’s e-mail. Plays should be neatly bound or stapled on the left hand corner. Each year, Page 73 offers the following three development programs to early-career playwrights:
The P73 Playwriting Fellowship, a nationally recognized fellowship program that supports one playwright for a full year with financial, production and career resources; “Interstate 73”, a writing group consisting six to eight emerging playwrights who are given the resources to develop new plays with a group of their peers; and a one-week summer residency on the Yale University campus for three to four early-career playwrights.

These programs serve as many as fifteen playwrights per year.

VOTING
Audience members will receive a ballot with the plays that are performing in the Performance series they are seeing that night. (We usually run 2 shows a night - each with 2 to 3 plays.) The audience will rate EACH play from 5 to 1. 5 being GREAT, 1 being JUST OK. 2 or more plays in a performance could be rated 5. Each play is rated from 5 to 1 on its own merit not in relation to the other plays in a performance series. This evens the playing field so that plays with less friends in the audience can actually move forward to the finals.

The Top 2 plays with the most points after 3 performances each will return on Saturday March 24 for 2 more performances 6:30 pm and 9 pm. The play that evening, which scores the most points that night, will receive the $1000 cash prize!

Please know that Manhattan Repertory Theatre reserves the right to change our policies at any time in order for the Competition to run more effectively.

So we have been running some seasonal One Act play competitions here at Manhattan Rep and they have been a great, fun, theatrical time for all.

But I have felt bad.

Bad because in our One Act play competitions, we have only been accepting plays 30 minutes and under, and all those playwrights with GREAT one act plays that are longer than 30 minutes have been cut out of the mix.

That is why we are running a LONG one act play competition - to give those playwright’s with LONGER awesome plays a chance to put their LONG one act play together and have it compete for a $1000 cash prize.

I am psyched. I love the Short play, but sometimes a Short play needs to be just a little longer so I am really looking forward to this new competition.

The Festival

East Village Chronicles, Vol. 8 is the 8th seasonal festival of new, one-act plays that celebrate and explore the varied history and eclectic culture that have defined Manhattan's Lower East Side (in all its permutations). Combined into two, distinct evenings of short plays, which run on alternating nights over three weeks, the presentations will include a variety of styles and tones, unified by their being clearly related to life in the theater's neighborhood.
Metropolitan Playhouse will produce the plays on our 3/4 thrust stage in our 51 seat theater at 220 E 4th Street.

The plays will be directed by directors engaged by Metropolitan to coordinate and rehearse the entire festival.

The plays will be performed by a core company of actors, cast specifically for the festival, each of whom will perform in at least two festival plays. The cast of any given play will be drawn from this core company, and therefore anyone cast must be suitable for more than one play. Because we are forming a company, while playwrights' input is highly desired, final decisions remain with Metropolitan's artistic staff.

The Theme for 2012: Class

The Chronicles plays have been connected each year in that they have focused on a certain topic, theme, or timeline. Selecting plays that are inspired by some such organizing principle helps to give the festival shape and to enrich the experience for audience members. (See * below for further discussion of the theme idea.)

This year, the Chronicles will be devoted to Class. We believe this theme is especially resonant within the context of our national conversation and the shifting social paradigms within the neighborhood. In our neighborhood, longstanding family businesses and residents continue to leave the neighborhood they once created, while newcomers have set up and changed their minds in the course of a year. As background to these real changes are the sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious divisions between residents seen through their sense of their own social status.
Playwrights are encouraged to respond directly, indirectly, and creatively to this idea; how the plays relate to the notion of "Class" is up to the playwright.

Technical Guidelines

We are seeking plays of no more than 30 minutes that can be played by 5 or fewer actors.
The plays will be presented with at least three others in a given evening, and as a consequence, should not require elaborate set or properties.

The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays (Fall, 2012) is seeking new full-length plays or musicals based on or inspired by works of classic literature or historic events, famous persons, or advances in science. These events, persons, or advances can be from any age in history, including the present. We prefer (but are not limited to) plays that require six actors or less, and have an interest in one-person shows. However, even in the case of one-person shows, we are not looking for history lectures, or museum piece adaptations that are faithful to a fault, but rather dynamic new theatrical versions of classic stories that speak to the contemporary mindset.
In musical submissions, we are interested in musicals based on or inspired by the same criteria as mentioned above.

In order to qualify for PlayFest a play must:

1. NOT have received more than two professional AEA productions

2. NOT have received a Broadway or Off-Broadway production

3. NOT have received Orlando production in current form

4. NOT be published for general distribution with the rights held by the Publisher

We will select seven new works to be presented as readings. One or more may go on to be developed in a workshop or full production. Playwrights will receive a stipend, travel and housing expenses. Some plays may go on to be fully produced as part of a subsequent Orlando Shakespeare Theater season, or produced at the University of Central Florida as part of our partnership with UCF.

Do you have to be gay to see your work produced at Theatre Out?
Absolutely not.

If not, does the play have to have a gay element?
Absolutely.

At Theatre Out, we are looking for plays that examine the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgenered "community" or experience - regardless of the playwright's orientation. But we do also produce pieces that may NOT examine the LGBT community, if we feel the play is good and the writer is an "out" member of the LGBT community.

It's pretty simple - gay themed, or gay written.

What we are NOT looking for is your straight play with an arbitrary character thrown in or quickly re-written to be the "gay ingredient" that makes your play a fit for our theatre. Trust us, we know when we receive these pieces, and they don't work for us. Please avoid it.

Does the play have to be an in-depth look at the LGBT experience? No - plays that feature gay characters or storylines are fine. We are not looking to produce a season full of in-depth looks into what it means to be LGBT or the struggles the LGBT community has faced. While those plays are fine to submit and often very moving, it's also a-okay to submit your gay comedy or your script that's not about "being" gay, but features, say, a lesbian couple or a drag queen.

So, you think your play might be right for Theatre Out? Great! Please follow these submission steps:

3) Email only 2 items - the completed form and a 10 PAGE sample to darcy@theatreout.com.

Suggestions, hints, tips ...

1) While your play does not necessarily have to be in proper playscript format, I really REALLY prefer reading scripts that are. Need help with formatting? CLICK HERE.

2) While I fully acknowledge that there are many skilled playwrights out there that have terrible skills when it comes to spelling or grammar, and while I'll definitely read your sample (regardless of the occasional error), excessive errors really make it difficult. I recommend having your script proof-read, using spell-check, etc - whatever you need to do before you send it off (to me or to anyone else.)

3) Send me your best 10 pages. It doesn't have to be the first 10 pages, necessarily. Though, if it is NOT the first 10 pages, please send me a SHORT (please re-read ... SHORT!) explanation of where we are in the script. (Example: "Act II, Scene II - Joe has just revealed that he and Gary ran off to Mexico to be married.") If you have filled out the submission form completely (and you SHOULD), then I won't need more than one sentence, maybe two, to clue me into where your 10 pages fall in the script.

4) You may be tempted to ignore this submission process and send me your whole script, and/or ignore the submission form. Tip: Please don't. I won't read your script. Please respect my submission process and I'll respect your work.

ATHE's Playwrights and Creative Teams Program (PACT) seeks new, previously unproduced short plays for its 23rd annual New Play Development Workshop at the ATHE Conference, in Washington, DC, August 2-5, 2012. We invite playwrights to submit plays ranging in length from 4-10 minutes (scripts over 10 minutes will not be accepted); there is no restriction on subject matter, style, or intended audience. A jury of readers will select six to eight scripts. Each playwright will be assigned a director, dramaturg, scenographer, and a group of actors; these creative teams collaborate on the scripts throughout the conference in a developmental process (participants may attend the rest of the conference). The workshop culminates in a public, script-in-hand reading of the plays in a SHOWCASE OF SCRIPTS.

The New Play Development Workshop affords playwrights the opportunity to work on their scripts with artists experienced with original material from all over the country and to have their work presented at a major academic theatre conference. In past years, plays which have gone through this process have been published in a PACT Program anthology. These plays achieve a high rate of success in securing subsequent productions and publication.

The BPP has begun accepting submissions for the 2012-13 Woodward/Newman Drama Award. Submissions are due by March 1, 2012. The top 10 finalists will be announced at the end of May with the winner announced in June 2012.

The Woodward/Newman Drama Award is an exclusive honor offered by Bloomington Playwrights Project, sponsored by the Newman's Own Foundation, remembering the many great dramas Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman performed in together. It presents the best unpublished full-length drama of the year with a prize of $3,000, a full production as part of the BPP's 2012-13 Mainstage season and travel expenses up to $300.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
(subject to change):

1. "Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).

2. Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.

3. Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.

4. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card.

5. It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.

6. We do not accept email submissions. Scripts will not be returned.

7. The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production. These instances are rare but can and do occur.

TimeLine Theatre Company is committed to developing and producing new work rooted in our mission of presenting stories inspired by history that connect with today's social and political issues.

Due to the volume of scripts considered, TimeLine is only able to accept full length play and musical submissions year-round from literary agents and theatre professionals with whom we have an existing professional relationship. We cannot accept unsolicited material.

After the success of last season’s inaugural Festival, Red Bull Theater’s Short New Plays Festival returns in 2012. Six short plays will be selected from an open-submission process and presented in staged readings with two short plays by commissioned writers (John Guare and one other TBA). Plays will be selected based on relevance to Red Bull Theater’s mission, incorporation of stated theme and excellence of the work. Directors for the plays are Ken Rus Schmoll and Anne Kaufmann.

The Drill
Write a short play of no more than 10 minutes in length that contains heightened language, verse, classical themes, or is an adaptation of a great classic story. This year, each play must respond to the following word:

We accept new, previously unproduced plays from both literary agents and directly from playwrights as unsolicited manuscripts, with some limitations. 'Unproduced' means not previously seen on a stage in a professional capacity, it does not include being previously produced as a staged reading.

Please send an email to submit@RoustTC.com including a cover note, a brief synopsis and your best 10-page selection from the script (either in a Word document or PDF). If the material interests us, we will contact you with a request for the complete script. Please don't email a complete script in the hope that we might, by some crazy chance, print it and read it. We won't, primarily for two reasons: we just don't have the time and we try and care about the environment by saving paper. If we discover you've sent the complete script your submission will be deleted.

A word to the wise, we only like to receive plays that fit our mission. Keep in mind that Roust focuses on important social matters. This doesn't mean we only accept political plays or dark brow-furrowing dramas, though we happen to produce those as well. Straight plays, musicals, comedies, love-stories, experimental pieces; if it's a social 'hot-potato', we want to read it. We need you, and so does theatre!

This series will take place at The Aurora Fox Theatre and The Edge Theatre over the course of three weeks, July 12 - 29, 2012. 6-8 plays will be selected based on a blind submission process. For 20 years, the Attic Theatre’s One-Act Festival has provided playwrights with the unique opportunity to see their work leap from page to stage, with the help of some of L.A.’s finest theatre & film professionals. Out of the hundreds of entries submitted to the Festival, between three and six of the strongest contenders will be selected to receive productions in the 2011 ONE-ACT FESTIVAL. A panel of judges selected by the artistic staff of the Attic Theatre Ensemble will choose the two best plays of the festival. ASUNCION PLAYWRIGHTS PROJECT

Pregones Theater's Asunción Playwrights Project showcases the work of Latino and Latina playwrights exploring issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity. The project fosters fun and genuine dialogue between playwrights, theatermakers, LGBTQ communities, and a general audience. We especially seek works that challenge normative straight/gay binaries. Submissions by women writers are encouraged. Both Spanish and English language manuscripts are welcome.

Finalists commit to a public reading and open discussion. A panel of peers, industry professionals, scholars, critics and previous winners makes the final selection of the year's winning play.

The winner receives a $500 award and the play is given a professionally cast workshop production at Pregones Theater.

Selection Process

The selection process is made up of two preliminary rounds.

The first round is open to all. A completed application form must be submitted with a 10 page sample of the work.

The second round is by invitation only. Up to eight playwrights from the first round are invited to submit their work in its entirety for final review. The public readings are selected from this group of finalists.

All plays must be original, full length works for the stage that have never been produced and are not currently under option. Plays may be submitted in Spanish or English. Monologues and/or one-person shows will not be considered. Asunción will only consider works of superior artistic rigor that meet one or more of the project's criteria:

• explore issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity;
• challenge normative assumptions of gender;
• present Latino spiritual and sensual explorations beyond the boundaries of gender and essentialist notions of sexual orientation;
• go beyond coming out stories;
• challenge normative notions of family;
• dwell in alterity and encounter;
• place queer expectations of love and sex in a Latino cultural/historical context;
• are significant to the lives of Latino lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer people.

The Asunción Playwrights Project is recognized with a special merit recognition from HOLA Organization of Latin Actors and a feature in Ollantay Theater Magazine.

PLAY WRITING COMPETITION TO COLLECT ORIGINAL SHORT PLAYS FOR 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

Your play must fit the theme – PLAYING GAMES – or it will not be considered.

Your play must follow the scenic requirements.

We require internet submissions in MS Word. Please follow our style sheet.

We are looking for NEW plays. Please do not send us anything that has previously been produced.

Please use no more than 4 characters and no less than 2.

We have a pool of actors ranging in age from 18 to 70. Please make sure that your characters can be played by actors within that range.

Your play should consist mainly of dialogue. Ten-minute monologues will not be accepted.

No children’s plays, musicals or plays previously staged by Heartland Theatre will be considered.

Do not put your name on the play itself, as all submissions are judged blind. Make sure your title appears on every page of the play, however.

If your play cannot be considered for any reason, we will notify you as soon as possible. If, in the judges’ opinion, the problem is easily fixable and the play otherwise has merit, we may ask you for revisions. Asking for revisions is completely up to the judges and depends a great deal on timing. No plays submitted after January 1 will be considered for revisions.

Those plays which win and are staged will be videotaped for archival purposes.

No contracts beyond the guidelines mentioned here will be offered.

Only one entry per playwright, please.

Your play must be written in English.

Rules for Scriptwriting Contest for Radio Theatre

The script should be between 15 minutes and 25 minutes in length.
It must be an original script, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions.
It must be appropriate in language and theme for a “family” audience.
There are no limits on cast size, sound effects or settings, but keep in mind that your script should be able to be performed with an ensemble of 6 to 12 people, and the sound will be created by a table full of gadg- ets, gizmos and the vocal talent of our sound effect wizards. We use an electronic keyboard for musical intros and outros, but we do not use pre-recorded sound effects or licensed musical recordings in our shows.
You can choose to write in the style of old-time radio, or you can go for something completely modern and original. We want to shed new light on the audio drama as an entertainment form, and introduce a new generation to the enjoyment of Theatre for the Ear.
Up to 3 scripts may be submitted by one author.
All scripts must be postmarked by or before February 29, 2012. Winners will be notified by April 1, 2012.
Scripts will be judged anonymously by a panel selected by the Board of Directors of the On-the-Air Radio Players.

How to Submit a Script:

All scripts should be typed, numbered and securely bound. The author’s name should not appear any- where in the manuscript except the first title page.

Please include TWO title pages: The first one will include the title, your name, address, phone num- ber, and email address. The second title page will have the title only.

Use a standard radio script format. Scripts will not be returned, so save a copy for yourself!

NYCPlaywrights article: How to write a good 10-minute play, part 1

Ten-minute plays are popular these days for basic economic reasons: they are relatively cheap to produce and if you do an evening of 10-minute plays you can count on a decent attendance because most writers will invite friends and family.

But that doesn't mean a ten-minute play can't be a great work of art. I will admit I've sat through 10-minute plays that felt like an hour. But why were they bad? What went wrong? Or more importantly, for the plays that do work - what went right?

Here is a guideline I first created for a show of 10-minute plays I produced in 2008 called 10 Min Playfest

Does the play pull me in right away?
There are only 10 minutes - the play has to pull you in right from the start.
Does the play surprise me?
If the play is about something I've heard a hundred times already, I'll be bored. Or if it unfolds in predictable ways, I will be bored.
Does the play make me laugh or well up? Or both?
Art must have an emotional impact.
Does the play have a dramatic struggle?
People sitting around bickering is not a dramatic struggle. So many people don't seem to understand that.
Does the play have vivid characters in compelling situations?
People sitting around bickering is not a compelling situation. Especially if the characters are called "man" and "woman." If the playwright can't be bothered to come up with a name for a character, it's usually a sign that the character is as generic as the label. This is especially true of a 10-minute play where you really don't have time for generic supporting characters.
Does the play show more than tell? "Show, don't tell" has been said a million times and yet maybe about 20% of all the people who write plays - including lionized, famous playwrights - seem to get this.
Does the play blow my mind through sheer funky originality?
This is the Holy Grail of ten-minute plays. I've seen only a handful of ten-minute plays that have blown my mind.

The Chameleon Theatre Circle located in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, is seeking original works that have never been produced. All styles and genres are welcomed (i.e. one-acts, musicals, full length dramas, etc.). The winning plays will be showcased in a concert-format festival in September 2012. All shows submitted will automatically be placed on the slate of shows in consideration for the 2013/2014 season by the Season Planning Committee.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We are proud to announce that for the 13th consecutive year we are not charging a submission fee! To enter you must complete an entry form (available on the web site) and submit it along with three (3) copies of each script to the address below. If you are submitting a musical, also include 3 copies of a CD of the music or 3 copies of the score. Do not bind any author identification with your scripts. We will distribute the scripts "blind" to our readers for complete objectivity. Include the show's title on at least the first bound page. Once the winning scripts have been chosen, we will disclose the playwrights' identity to our readers (and the world).

We do not accept plays that have been previously produced. We do accept plays that have had workshops and other readings. Receipt of play(s) will be acknowledged by e-mail only upon request. Scripts are non-returnable.

As in past years, this year's contest will have multiple categories:

TEN-MINUTE PLAYS
Three to five winners will receive $25 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. All short plays will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 15 pages or less will fall into this category.

ONE-ACT
One to three winners will receive $50 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can be joined with one or two other shows of similar length to make up a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 20-60 pages will fall into this category.

FULL-LENGTH
One to two winners will receive $100 plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can constitute a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. It is important to note that these shows can be one, two, or more acts, as long as it makes up a complete evening of theatre.

MUSICALS
If five or more musicals are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "musical" category. Musicals are defined as any original play using original or rights permitted musical dialogue to further the story and/or the characters. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any musical will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

THEATRE-FOR-YOUTH
If five or more plays intended for and/or by youth are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "theatre-for-youth" category. Theatre-for-youth plays are defined as any original play intended for young audiences, young participants, or both. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any theatre-for-youth submission will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

OVERALL CONTEST WINNER/AUDIENCE FAVORITE WINNER
At the theatre's discretion, we reserve the right to designate or not designate an "Overall Contest Winner" from any category and an "Audience-Favorite Winner" from any category at the conclusion of the New Play Festival. No additional prize money is awarded, just bragging rights.

Each playwright may submit up to two plays in any of these combinations:

It turned out that the city had never given up trying to determine the aroma’s origin. It had quietly created a crack maple-syrup team that remained on the case.The North Bergen factory, owned by a company called Frutarom, used the herbal seeds to manufacture food flavors, releasing a pungent, generally pleasant smell in the process. Under the right weather conditions — high humidity, no rain — the aroma drifts across the Hudson onto the West Side of Manhattan.

We are searching for commercially viable comedies and dramas with innovative storytelling that deal with important social issues.

We accept only previously unproduced comedies and dramas with a running time of one hour and fifteen minutes to two hours.

Playwrights may submit only one play per year.

Abingdon Theatre Company’s Benefit Challenge Series

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE GOSSIP PLAYS Benefit Challenge. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Our Gossip Plays Benefit Series challenges your creativity to write a short drama or comedy where a character must respond to rumors or misinformation of a personal matter. Be creative! Consider all forms of gossip: slander, cyber-bulling, dishing, character assignation. We are especially interested in plays where gossip threatens a character’s vital relationships.

We strongly encourage original play submissions that are developed for this presentation.

Using your skills and imagination, write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production, LIFELINE, by Frank Tangredi and directed by Jules Ochea. We are seeking plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Plays are due at midnight on February 17. SERIES A performs on Tuesday, March 13, and SERIES B performs on March 20. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully!

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (the 55-seat Dorothy Strelsin Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).
This is also a fundraiser to support Abingdon’s New Play Development Program. ALL participants are donating their time and talent, and HELPING TO RECRUIT AN AUDIENCE. Our goal is to fill every seat in the house! The suggested audience donation is $10.
Each playwright and director will be able to attend the staged reading of their script in designated seating.
Every play gets two performances.

Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:

Your play must adhere to the theme of gossip.
Your play must be set in a one-room apartment. Available set pieces are a desk, small table, and three chairs.
Write for a cast of 2-3 actors (any age, race, ethnicity, or gender).
We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.
Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.
Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. On your title page, please include your contact information (phone, email and address). Be sure to number all pages.
Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.
Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered. Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!
You may only submit one script for consideration.
Playwrights must attend the staged reading. Please specify your availability for SERIES A (3/13), and/or SERIES B (3/20). If you are available for either slots, let us know that, too!
We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible. The schedule will be determined later.

McKinney Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce The 2nd Annual MRT New Play Competition. MRT is committed to providing quality entertainment for the community through cultural education and inspiration. We will begin our 10th season in Fall of 2012 and would like to encourage new playwrights to share their inspirations and hard work with us. MRT offers the competition winner the chance to see the playwright’s work fully realized on stage, and we hope that the winning play will go on to numerous productions elsewhere as well.

DETAILS

An MRT committee will choose one play as the Winner to fully produce sometime in our 2012-2013 Season. A second play will be chosen as Runner-Up and that play will receive a staged reading in the 2012-2013 Season. The Winner and Runner Up will be announced on or before July 31st, 2012.

Guidelines:

1. Submission must be postmarked no later than April 10, 2012.

2. Only original, full length, unpublished scripts will be accepted.

3. Plays must not have been previously produced nor have won awards (although previous readings are acceptable).

4. Adaptations, translations, musicals and children’s plays will not be accepted.

5. Only one submission per playwright will be accepted. In the case of multiple submissions, only the play determined by the committee to be the first submission will be considered.

6. Casts of eight or fewer are preferred. Adult casts are preferred.

Strike 38! is requesting submissions for the first annual TIME TO STRIKE short play competition. After collaborating in play festivals and producing shows in previous years, we have decided to step it up and search for the next big thing in theater! We are going to show everyone what theater can be about. We are looking for 5 to 15 minute plays that will share an entire story with our audience, so bring your best. Competition Rules:
There are three rounds to this competition:
• First Round: Submitting the play. The play will be read by three people, and they will choose from 15 to 20 plays to advance to the second round. Judges for first round are Nelson Diaz-Marcano(Artistic Director), Timothy Charles Browne (Literary Manager), and Rebecca Aparicio (Writer/Director.)
• Second Round: You will showcase your production in a bare stage version to our judges. There will be a $10 fee for this (Only fee that will be asked unless you will not be producing your show). This will take place at the beginning of April.
• Third Round: Eight to 10 plays will be chosen from the second round and will have a full stage production on May 13, 2012. There will be two showings. There will be judges voting to award for categories of Best Production, Best Writer, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director. The audience will be included in the voting. They will vote on a scale of 1 to 4 and there will also be a cash prize of a $100 for the winner of the Audience Favorite Award.

Occupy the Empty Space call for short works

Thank you for your interest in Occupy the Empty Space, an OWS-affiliated theatrical act of creative resistance in the form of a short play festival. Or, in other words, a ten minute play festival that will look nothing like a ten minute play festival. Occupy the Empty Space will be accepting submissions from now till February 15th for a festival date in mid-late March. Occupy the Empty Space will be noncommercial, staged in a nontraditional space, audience interactive, and inclusive of many guilds within the OWS movement and neighborhood residents/activists in NYC.

We do not and will not dictate any requisite tone or theme, but we do encourage pieces that engage audiences, represent contemporary American life, and promote diversity. We highly encourage political pieces, pieces dealing with a variety of political and social justice issues, and pieces that represent many different perspectives. We encourage pieces with under three-four characters; less is often more. Also, we encourage playwrights/monologuists who represent the wide array of individuals living in NY to submit, and we would love to explore bilingual work in this festival.

DETAILS

The selected plays will be rehearsed and then presented without the conventions of costumes, set (aside from chairs/tables and the space we are in), or, ideally, props. This does not mean there will be zero design elements, but that minimalism is key. The actors will, however, be asked to memorize for the performance. Any indicators of set or costumes that are required to convey the message of the play will be read aloud in the stage directions. Actors/directors will be provided from OWS casting pool. When you are writing, consider that the festival may be staged indoor or outdoor and plays with strong emphasis on interpersonal relationships and/or relationship to the audience will be best suited for this project.

Guidelines, Rules, & General Information on our 2012 Competition

     Our "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" program is designed to help foster and highlight the vibrant body of new political theatre creations that are being crafted in America today. Please take a look at the rules and guidelines listed below and find out if your latest work would be a good fit for our program.

     The deadline for submissions for the 2012 "sHORTs" competition is February 1st, 2012 (details on the submission process are provided below). Selections will be announced no later than May 1st, 2012. All selections will be performed as part of our 2012 "sUBVERsIVE sHORTs" Showcase in June/July of 2012. All works are presented on a royalty-free basis.

     We consider our "sHORTs" program to be an incubator for developing promising new works. For that reason, the director of each project may propose possible re-writes, cuts, or alterations to works. Playwrights are asked to remain cooperative and open-minded with this process. Playwrights will be consulted regarding any significant changes to their work and no significant alterations will be made without advanced approval by the author.

     Subversive Theatre retains the right to assign directors, cast actors, and craft the presentation of all selected submissions as we see fit.
The Submission Process:

     To enter your work for consideration, send your submission as an attachment to shorts@subversivetheatre.org (please send a separate e-mail for each submission). Eligibility:

     To be eligible for this competition plays must run no more than 30 minutes in length and be "subversive" in some aspect of content and/or style. What qualifies as "subversive" is of course a matter of interpretation and our selection committee will always keep an open mind in reviewing entries. But the primary type of submissions that will be considered are works that address some sort of political and/or social issue in a radical and/or unconventional and/or controversial way.
     Due to the limited resources available for this program, special consideration will be given to works that have modest production needs (although we'll always consider a more involved project if it is particularly strong). The "sHORTs" Showcase is presented as a cabaret-style production with multiple works being performed in quick succession. Plays with simple set-up and small casts (or casts that can easily be doubled up to be performed by a small group of actors) are typically the best fit for this format.
The Selection Process:

     Subversive Theatre maintains a Selection Committee of no less than four members. All entries will be reviewed by at least two readers for consideration. After an initial round of screening, submissions will be passed onto all members of the Selection Committee. Semi-Finalists will then be referred to the body of directors for this year's Showcase.
     Directors will make one round of selections and then finally select the plays they wish to direct from a group of Finalists.

Circus Theatricals is seeking one act / short plays for our Spring 2012 One Act Play Festival. Winners will have their plays produced in our one act play festival in Los Angeles. "Best of the Fest" one acts will also be produced at a later date. Last year's one act "GAME 7" was made into a short film, produced by Circus Theatrials Foundation. Congratulations to playwright Matt Tucker!

Guidelines:

    Plays must be no longer than 15 pages or less (20 minutes).
    Play may have been previously produced, but not in Los Angeles or Southern California.
    Plays with simple production value are preferred.
    Previous production history is required for all submitted plays.

Theatre seeks short one-act plays for production in July. The theme of Eastbound Summer 2012 will be “XII”. 5 finalists will receive a production of their play, and compete for the Summer Audience Award.

Guidelines
Deadline is February 17, 2012.
There is no submission fee.
There is no compensation for performance.
Playwrights will maintain all rights to their material.
Playwrights may submit more than one play.

THE SECOND ANNUAL OHIO STATE NEWARK NEW PLAY CONTEST

Rules and Information:

1) The contest is open to anyone, anywhere; plays, however, must be written in English.

2) Plays must be unproduced (even as a workshop) and unpublished, up to and including the contest deadline.

3) Please use the standard playwriting format for manuscripts.

4) Playwrights may submit as many manuscripts as they like; however, each entry must be in a separate envelope. Please make sure that each manuscript does not contain your name anywhere, but do include your name on a separate piece of paper, along with full contact information, including an email address. (This is to ensure that judging is blind.) Electronic submissions are not allowed.

5) Plays are to be full-length works; a collection of short plays is not an acceptable substitute.

6) The absolute deadline for submissions to be received is April 1, 2012. Winners will be announced on or before September 1, 2012.

7) Third prize is $100, and second prize is $300. The first prize winner will receive $500, and the first-prize play will be given a full production in the spring of 2013, dates to be selected. The playwright is welcome to attend; regrettably, Ohio State Newark cannot defray expenses.

8) Please keep in mind that Ohio State Newark is a one-person department: thus, in addition to quality, the winning play will be selected partly on the basis of ease of production. For practical purposes, seven or eight characters is probably the upper limit; for the same reason, unit sets are encouraged.

9) In addition to the prize winners, there will be an indeterminate number of honorable mentions, designated by a certificate (suitable for framing).

10) Winners will be notified by individual emails; unsuccessful candidates will receive a mass email.

11) Following the contest, all manuscripts except the first-prize winner will be shredded.

12) Because of the expected number of submissions, individual critical comments cannot be provided.

Dramatic Publishing has an open submission policy and we are always interested in receiving new plays to review for publication.

Scripts should be typed neatly and clearly reproduced (do not send us your only copy). Standard playwriting format is preferred but not required. In this format, character headings are centered above the line in capital letters, lines are 1.5 spaced, and stage directions are indented and single-spaced.

    We do not accept e-mailed submissions.

    All pages must be numbered. Always send a properly bound script. Do not send loose pages or pages held together with an elastic band or paperclip.

    Include your name, address, and phone number on the title page of the play.

    Include a cast list with specific character descriptions, assignment of male/female roles, and total cast/doubling. Also include the set/technical requirements.

    Include a synopsis of the play, its production history and/or photographs from productions, any relevant reviews, and any playwriting awards it has won. All plays must have had either a production or a staged reading to be considered for publication.

    If your work is a play with music, include a cassette tape or CD and any written sheet music.

    Please include a regular letter-size stamped envelope for our reply. We will not return any of the material submitted.

Submitting a Play to Tinderbox

Tinderbox is always delighted to receive uncommissioned scripts submitted according to the guidelines below. The company has a script panel that will read and feed back on all plays. Tinderbox tries to give appropriate feedback to playwrights whatever experience they may have of writing for the stage.

If you wish to submit a play to Tinderbox, please bear in mind the following:

Please make sure you understand the company’s remit and artistic vision and output so that you send us appropriate material which we can genuinely consider.

Please submit the play in hardcopy

Tinderbox does not read plays submitted by e-mail unless there are exceptional circumstances

Plays do not need to be bound

Make sure the pages are numbered

Please enclose a covering letter with a paragraph about yourself and a paragraph about the idea behind the play (that is not the same as a synopsis!). Only send it in when the script is ready and tidy. i.e. minimise typos, spell check, make sure it is clear what are stage directions and what is dialogue. It is easier to read if there is white space in-between each character’s lines.

    Please include a cast list and any potential doubling
    Full name and contact details should be provided on the covering letter

Please note that Tinderbox is not able to consider the following for productions:

    Plays which have had a professional production elsewhere
    Novels and poetry
    Radio, television and film scripts
    Synopsis only submissions

Tinderbox will acknowledge receipt of a submitted script, which will then be sent to a member of the script panel. This panel consists of theatre practitioners with extensive experience in directing, writing or acting. The reader will write a detailed script report with constructive notes which the playwright will be offered. Please note, it may take up to three months from submission before a script report is ready. Each play is given approximately 4 hours dedicated time from Tinderbox.

The reader will recommend to the Literary Manager what kind of follow up should be pursued or will ask for a second read to be done by another member of the panel.

We will use our discretion with plays that at a first glance are unsuitable for us due to length, large cast, space or technical requirements that we can not access. In these cases we will only read the first 30 pages and we will not be able to provide full feedback.

Work in progress

Tinderbox can read works in progress if it is clearly stated in the covering letter. In this case the material will not be considered for production but the script panel reader will focus on giving dramaturgical feed back on the ideas and work so far with emphasis on suggestions for how to move the work forward.

Expectations

Finishing a play is a major achievement and something of which to be very proud. However the journey to a potential production is only beginning when a play is submitted to a theatre.

Tinderbox is a small touring company producing 2-3 productions a year, with approximately 70 scripts being submitted every year. In addition the company has several writers on commission at any one time.

Although it is very rare for a play that has come through the script panel to go directly into production, this should not deter you from writing to Tinderbox. In addition to productions the company provides support to writers in many different ways. If the company knows about you and your work, you can be kept in mind for future activities, pointed in appropriate alternative directions and alerted to other companies and opportunities. The most beneficial thing the company can offer in the short term will be the constructive feedback written by the script panel. Long-term it is important to build relationships with theatres and allow them to develop over a long period of time.

NYCPlaywrights' February 2012 Play of the Month

10-Minute Play of the Month: FEBRUARY 2012

The theme is "subway plays."

This month is a little different - this time we're looking for plays that take place in a subway car and the reading will be recorded in a subway car. The play can be about anything, as long as it takes place in a subway car.

The deadline is Sunday, February 5th at 11:59 PM.

1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.

10. The play can have had a previous production but cannot have been published.

11. All rights will remain with the playwright.

12. The selected play will be videotaped and posted during the month of February.

13. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.

14. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.

15. The readings that are recorded are actual script-in-hand readings, not productions - although there may be some video production work, such as multi-camera views, music, titles; or minor stage work such as hand props or actor movements. Secret Theater seeks plays

The One Act Factor is a brand new competition style one act play festival held this year in March. Each week actors, playwrights, and directors band together and compete to win cash prizes in Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress in a showdown similar to the popular talent shows we've all seen on TV. As the weeks go by, teams advance to the final rounds through audience votes. Awards are also determined by celebrity judges who give encouragement and advice to all the contestants. Hosted by the comedy troupe, Face-Off Unlimited, this new form of one act festival is sure to be fun for all involved: actors, directors, playwrights, and audience alike.

The One Act Factor is now accepting submissions for this year's festival running March 15-April 1. Deadline for submission is January 21.

Directors are responsible for casting but the theatre will provide at least one day of open call auditions to facilitate casting as well as provide the free space (limited) if directors wish to hold their own auditions. Minor script adjustments may be suggested in order to suit the festival production. Playwrights may not direct their own submissions. Strong consideration given to submissions from Queens-based playwrights.

Nylon Fusion Collective Short Play Submissions

Submissions requested for Nylon Fusion Collective’s first annual ‘Amour and More; This Round’s on Us’ Valentine’s weekend new short play festival. Plays may not be longer than 10 pages (monologues not longer than two pages.) Large casts okay but minimal props and costumes. Sorry, no musicals. The theme is up to you, but all plays must take place on Valentine’s Day, be original and never before produced. Authors agree to permit Nylon Fusion Collective to produce their submitted play if the company wishes to do so. The company is responsible for all aspects of production including selecting a director and casting. The author retains full copyright and ownership of their play. Participation in the rehearsal project is required; authors must be residents of the NYC metropolitan area. Performances are in New York City February 10-11th. No Pay.
